CALP, Spain — A tourist on holiday along the Costa Blanca was injured on Sunday when they chose an unmarked and dangerous route on the steep western slope of the Penyal d’Ifac rock formation, prompting a rescue operation by local police and emergency services.
The hiker had been exploring the coastal cliffs near the Princesa de Asturias promenade when they attempted to cross a steep embankment of loose stones — a route not intended for pedestrians and not marked as a trail. The unstable ground gave way, causing the person to fall and injure their knee.
The injured hiker was left bruised and unable to descend the slope on their own.
Quick rescue by local authorities
Agents from the Calp Local Police Maritime Surveillance and Intervention Unit (UVIM) were dispatched to the scene. The UVIM regularly patrols the coastline on bicycle, making them well suited to respond quickly to emergencies along the shore.
Officers climbed up to the injured person and, with the assistance of paramedics, carefully escorted them down the slope to an ambulance. The hiker received first aid on site before being transported to a hospital for further assessment.
Police issue safety warnings
Following the incident, the Calp Local Police issued a reminder of basic mountain safety guidelines to prevent similar accidents, particularly during the peak tourist season.
Authorities advise the following precautions:
- Wear appropriate hiking footwear with good grip — sandals or flat shoes are not suitable for rocky terrain.
- Carry sufficient water, especially in summer heat.
- Avoid hiking during the hottest hours of the day.
- Inform someone of your planned route before setting out.
- Carry a mobile phone with a fully charged battery.
The Penyal d’Ifac is one of the most iconic natural landmarks on the Costa Blanca, a protected nature reserve that rises 332 metres above the Mediterranean. It draws thousands of visitors each year, but not all paths are suitable for untrained walkers — and many unofficial routes are steep, rocky, and dangerous.
