A 45- and 48-year-old man have been arrested following a series of break-ins at vehicles parked at a shopping centre in Ondara, in the Marina Alta region of Alicante. The suspects were caught on the job ransacking parked cars, and went further than merely stripping the vehicles — they also used the victims’ bank cards to make fraudulent purchases.
The investigation began after the Guardia Civil noticed a sharp increase in break-ins at the shopping centre car park in Ondara. Officers intensified patrols, followed persons and vehicles of interest, and reviewed security camera footage before closing in on the suspects.
From Ondara to Other Towns in Alicante Province
The operation resulted in the arrest of two men aged 45 and 48, suspected of involvement in a string of vehicle break-ins and the subsequent fraudulent use of bank cards taken from victims, armed sources confirmed.
Against the backdrop of repeated incidents, officers from the El Verger police post activated a specialised operation to identify those responsible. The operation combined an increased police presence in the area with checks on persons and vehicles considered suspicious, alongside a thorough review of security camera recordings.
A Suspicious Vehicle — the Turning Point
During one of these checks, Civil Guard officers stopped a vehicle occupied by three men that raised their suspicions. The officers identified them and found that all three had prior criminal records related to this type of offence, according to the Peripheral Communications Office (OPC) of the Alicante Provincial Command of the Guardia Civil.
Further inquiries linked two of the occupants to several break-ins not only in Ondara but also in other towns across the province of Alicante.
Two Fraudulent Purchases
The investigation suggests that after making off with valuables found in the vehicles, the suspects used the victims’ stolen bank cards to carry out fraudulent purchases.
The Guardia Civil arrested two of the three men, aged 45 and 48, as alleged responsible for six offences related to vehicle break-ins and subsequent bank fraud. The two arrests were handed over to the Instruction Section of the Court of First Instance in Dénia.
